Project 2

Neighbourhood Market & Food Court

Project 2 calls for the design of a Neighbourhood Market and Food Court within the suburban neighbourhood of Bangi. We are required to provide full design proposals incorporating findings from precedent studies and site analysis. We will generate narratives that respond to the environment and community as user group within the given context and explore environmental poetics of building enclosure’s design solutions that reduce environmental impact utilizing various complex typologies of spatial organisations and a variety of passive strategies for sustainable design. The design should contribute to and merge harmoniously with environment and site and provide the best of spatial experiences in fostering a sense of community.

Design Intention

- Weaving -

As the site is located at the central point between four nodes- school, recreational park, commercial shops and residential area, it has attracted different demographics to the site, for instance, adults who go to the market to purchase groceries, elderlies who chill around the food court, vendors who open up their stalls at the market, students who linger around the market after their school time or extracurricular activities and children who play around the park at the back of the market. To me, what makes a market a place for community is the interaction between different people that creates the communal feeling and depicts the close-knitted community. Thus, the design intention of "Weaving" came about. The idea behind "weaving" is to encourage and weave the interaction between different demographics and to connect different site elements into the market.

Reflection

I started this project by identifying and analyzing environmental qualities and contextual needs of a site. Then, I incorporated the analysis with my design intention to design and create architectural spaces with consideration of environmental poetics in relation to the basic natural context and existing built context which impact on users’ experiences. I have also explored ways to combine the environmental needs, the site tangible and intangible features, and the users’ experiences within simple building design in the suburban context.
