PROJECT 1
Food Kiosk
For Project 1, each student will undertake small design task. In this introductory exercise, students are to design a FOOD KIOSK that is meant to serve as a small space for the preparation, (light cooking and reheating), trade (buying and selling) and the consumption of food (eating). The kiosk should be flexible, lightweight, moveable (as in it could be transported to different locations) as well as safe with all mechanisms being simple and easy to operate. The main materials for its construction should reasonably weather-proof and outdoor worthy.
Design Intention
In this project, shaved ice dessert (ais kacang) is chosen as the food to be sold in the food kiosk designed. In studying about the food preparation process of ais kacang, I was inspired by the process of shaving the ice (solid) into something thin and light. Thus, the idea of transforming a solid looking structure into a translucent and light structure of the food kiosk. Aluminium was chosen as to show the solidity of the food kiosk when it is closed and ptfe is used to show the translucency when the food kiosk is open.

Reflection
Through this project, I have explored the relationship between materiality and use in optimizing the atmosphere, for instance the use of aluminium and ptfe. I have also learned different ways to meet the imperative and inter-related environmental and social needs in architectural form, as well as make poetry with materials and spaces.
